Itook the shot. The cue ball hit the 8, then made a beeline for the corner pocket, just like I was afraid it would do.

The 8-ball began its unstoppable march across the felt.

The cue ball rattled between the bumpers in the corner pocket and teetered on the lip, still spinning.

The 8-ball continued on its trajectory and dropped into the near corner pocket.

The cue ball remained topside.

Romano looked dumbfounded.

The slack-jawed onlookers stared in disbelief. Romano had been dethroned.

It took Jimmy a moment to process what had happened. When he did, rage twisted his face, and his cheeks flushed. He looked like he was about to explode. He snapped the pool cue across his knee, the crack echoing across the pool hall.

The crowd felt the tension and leaned back. Jimmy was unpredictable.

The stakeholder who held the keys didn’t know what to do. His nervous eyes flicked to Romano. After a moment, Jimmy gave him a nod of approval. The stakeholder walked over to us and handed over both sets of keys.

Jimmy took a moment to compose himself and walked up toward me. He held out his hand, and we shook. "Congratulations. Nice shooting. Enjoy the moment. It's a rare day when I lose.”

I had to admit, he was gracious about it.

"Of course, a gentleman would give me an opportunity to win my car back.”

I smiled. "I think I'd like to enjoy it for a little while, but you never know what the future holds. Part of the deal was that you agreed to talk to us.”

"What do you want to know?"

"I want to know who killed Chris Reed.”

Jimmy laughed. “So do I. It wasn’t me.”

With the excitement over, the crowd began to disburse.

"I’ll need the title to the car," I said.

Jimmy gave a grim nod.

"Where were you last night between 10:00 PM and midnight?”

"Right here,” he said.

"Can anyone verify that?"

He flagged over a cute waitress that had been serving us. “Tonya, can you tell these gentlemen where I was last night?"

“Right here,” she said with a smile. “At this very table.”

Tonya was an enticing blonde with mesmerizing attributes. The hot-pants hugged every curve, and her low-cut top and push-up bra could make you miss a shot here and there.

Jimmy smiled. "I like this table. It's my lucky table. I guess I might need to find a new one.”

"Perhaps,” I said.

"Well, it's not like losing that car is going to make me or break me,” Jimmy said, shrugging off the loss.

"How much was Chris in to you for?”

He shrugged as he thought about it. "$200,000, give or take.”

"That's not small change.”

He shrugged it off again.

"Do you own a gun?”

"I don't have to tell you.”

"I'm going to take that as a yes. I'm sure a man in your line of work has several.”

"And what exactly is my line of work?”

"Chris didn't lose $200,000 to you in a pool game.”

Jimmy grinned.

“I know you’ve got a lot of money out on the street. You collect money for the mob. Nobody in their right mind would cross you.
